Vortex Defender-CCW: The Crispest Dot I've Used, and the Version I Want Isn't Sold

The crispest dot I have looked through, and the one complaint I started with did not survive the round count.

The version I actually want is not for sale

If you are looking at a green dot because of astigmatism, this is the thing to know before anything else on this page.

Vortex will not sell you green in a sealed housing. I went through the whole Defender line to be sure. The enclosed models exist in the CCW and the ST, and both of those are red only. Green shows up in the CCW, the ST and the XL, and every one of them is an open emitter. There is no combination anywhere in the line that gets you both.

That matters more here than it would on most optics, because of what this one is called. CCW. An open emitter riding in a holster every day collects lint and dust and whatever else is down there, and a sealed housing is the entire answer to that problem. Vortex builds the sealed housing. They just will not put a green dot in it.

So if you want this optic for the reason its name suggests, and you want green for the reason I wanted green, you are being asked to pick one. I would rather tell you that up front than let you find it at checkout.

The complaint I had, and do not have anymore

When I first mounted this thing I wrote down that I wished it had a circle-dot reticle instead of a bare dot. A 3 MOA dot is precise, and precise is great when you have time. But I run a Sig Romeo with a red circle-dot on my P365 Fuse, and a Holosun 507k will do the same, and for picking a target up quickly I was sure the ring was what I wanted.

I do not think that anymore. I want to be careful about how I say that, because "guy on a manufacturer loan gradually stops complaining" is exactly the sentence you should be suspicious of when you read it.

So here is specifically what changed my mind. I kept shooting it. More than 600 rounds since I mounted it in late August, on reactive steel as well as paper, indoors first and then outdoors in real sun. Somewhere in there the dot stopped being a thing I went looking for and started being a thing that was already there when the gun came up. I did not train for that on purpose. It happened through repetition, and it is the opposite of what I expected to learn.

The ring would solve a problem I no longer have.

The open emitter is a different kind of complaint, and I still have that one, because no amount of range time changes what a company decides to put in its catalog.

Why I asked for this one

I wanted it for the TX22 TORO specifically, and the reason is boring and practical. It drops onto that pistol's native optic cut with no adapter plate. Vortex lists the footprint as Shield RMS, and their manual says it shares screw spacing with the RMS and will sit on anything cut for one. What I can tell you from my own bench is that it went onto the TORO with nothing in between. Adapter plates are one more stack of parts between the optic and the slide, and one more thing to come loose.

Green was the other reason. I have moderate astigmatism, and the advice you hear is that green reads cleaner than red for that. I went in suspecting it was partly hype.

The rest was ordinary. Vortex's warranty is not in question, I have been happy with their binoculars and their scopes for years, and I liked that this one has motion activation, which my Trijicon does not. And there was a money argument. I love my RMR and it has been solid for about six years, but I am not going to pay RMR price point for a fun .22 cal pistol. On a daily carry gun, paying double might be worth it. On this, no.

The mounting, which was a mess, and was not the optic's fault

This is the part I would want to read, so here it is in full.

There is conflicting information online about which screws mount an optic to the TX22 TORO. I found a recommendation for 6/32 screws, installed them, and they felt secure when I tightened them down. They were not. After three fired rounds they were coming loose. I snugged them back down and kept going. After the fifth round it was obvious this was not going to hold, and I had not brought other screw lengths to the range, so I went home.

The fix was M4 x 0.7 in a 9.8mm length, which I found by reading forum posts from people who had hit the exact same wall on the exact same pistol. Blue Loctite on those, hand tight, and it has not moved since.

I want to be clear about where the blame sits. Vortex shipped this optic with six separate packets of screws for mounting to different pistols. They did their part. What was missing was clear information from Taurus about what the TORO cut actually wants, and I burned a range trip finding that out the hard way.

I did not use a torque wrench. Vortex calls for 10 to 12 inch-pounds when you are using thread locker, or 15 without it, and my torque wrenches are all foot-pound tools meant for heavier work. So I went to hand tight with Loctite and left it there. That is what I did, not what I am telling you to do.

Worth adding, because it cuts against me rather than for me: the manual has a troubleshooting entry headed "mounting screws coming loose," and the fix it gives is thread locker at that torque. The answer was in the box. What the manual could not tell me was which screws a TORO takes, and that was the part that actually cost me the trip.

The dot itself, which is the whole reason to buy it

The green is crisp and clean and it does not bloom.

That sentence needs context to be worth anything, because "crisp" on its own is the kind of thing anybody writes. I have moderate astigmatism. On my Trijicon RMR, on my Sig, and on an EOTECH holographic I bought for an AR specifically because I had been told holographic sights handle astigmatism better, I see bloom. Some smear. That is my normal. This is the crispest of any form of red dot I have used, and it is the first one that gives me a clean point of light instead of a small starburst.

There is one caveat and it is the reason I believe the rest of it. If you crank the brightness well past where you would actually run it, the star does come back. At the setting I actually use, it does not. So the honest version is not "green cures astigmatism." It is that this optic at a sensible brightness gives me a clean dot, and if you run it at maximum for no reason you will undo that.

On window size my honest answer is a little unsatisfying. Hold it up and look for the housing and it is absolutely there in your peripheral vision. But I have been shooting a red dot as my preferred pistol setup for more than five years, and my brain has learned to just see "through" it. I never once noticed the housing while shooting, and I cannot tell you whether someone newer to dots would.

I will say where I think the small window would stop working. On something big, like a full size 2011 or my Sig P320 X5 Legion, I think this would be undersized. On a TX22 it is right.

In the sun, on steel

Most of my early shooting with this was indoors. In September I got it outside on a considerably brighter day, shooting reactive steel as well as paper, and part of that was against a yellow target background, which is about the least helpful backdrop you can put behind a green dot.

It held. No wash-out at the top of the brightness range, and no hunting for the dot against the yellow.

That was also the session that killed my reticle complaint, which I have already said more about than it probably deserves.

The battery, and the small things

The battery is a CR1632 and it loads from the top, which means I never have to break the mount to change it. My RMR does not do that. My Sig loads from the side. Of every pistol dot I own, this is the arrangement I would pick.

It ships with a proprietary tool that is both the key for the battery compartment and the driver for the mounting screws, which is the kind of small thing that stops you hunting through a drawer.

Vortex publishes 9,500 hours of battery life if you leave it on around the clock. That is their number and not mine. I have seen nothing to suggest the battery has weakened, and I also have not had it long enough for that to mean anything at all.

Cleaning is a microfiber pass and a few seconds. The inside corners of the open emitter are the awkward part, and a Q-tip gets in there.

What I did not test

This is the section that matters most on a loaned optic, so I am going to be thorough about it.

I never carried it. The optic is named CCW and it has lived its entire life on a suppressed .22 that gets shot for fun. That is a problem, because the one real complaint I have is about an open emitter collecting debris, and daily carry is precisely the thing that would prove or disprove it. I am telling you about a failure mode I have reasoned about and not observed.

Recoil, honestly. Everything I can tell you about the dot tracking cleanly was learned on a rimfire with a suppressor hanging off the muzzle adding weight. That is close to the gentlest test there is. I have no idea how this behaves on a 9mm micro-compact and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Durability over time. It is a loan. Nothing here is a durability verdict.

Battery life. Vortex's figure, not my observation.

Torque to spec. Hand tight with Loctite, as above.

Zero retention through a dismount. Never dismounted it. It went on with Loctite and there was no reason to take it off, so I cannot tell you whether it returns to zero.

A genuinely dark room at the lowest setting. Still have not done it.

Compared to what I already own

Against a Trijicon RMR, this wins on the battery arrangement, on motion activation, and on price, and it is not close on price. Against a Holosun 407k, which is what I cross-shopped, the difference that mattered to me was green and the fact that it drops straight onto the TORO.

Where the RMR wins is the thing you cannot shortcut. I literally would trust my life to my RMR, because of what it has been put through and how long mine has worked. This optic may well get there. It has not had the time, and I am not going to hand it a reputation it has not earned yet.

If you already run a good dot, a Holosun, a Sig, a Trijicon, a DeltaPoint Pro, I would not tell you to replace it with this. The exception is the one this whole review turns on: if you have astigmatism and your current dot smears or stars for you, that is a real problem and this is a real fix. If you dont have any existing problems, probably not worth replacing.

Where this leaves me

The optic goes back to Vortex when the loan is up. I will likely be adding one to my personal collection for this gun.

That is the most useful thing I can tell you about a product somebody lent me, so I want it to be the last thing on the page rather than buried. I say likely because I have not placed the order yet, and I would rather tell you where I actually stand than round it up. What I can tell you is that I would not spend my own money on it if the dot were not doing something for my eyes that nothing else I own does.

I still wish they made it sealed in green. I expect I will still wish that a year from now.

Buy it if

You have astigmatism and red dots star or smear for you. That is the problem this solves, and it solves it better than anything else I have looked through.

Buy something else if

Red dots look fine to your eye. You will pay less for red, and a Holosun 407k does that job well. Also buy elsewhere if you need a sealed emitter, because Vortex does not offer one in green.
